This is quite an easy fix.
The crash to desktop is caused by an update of windows internet explorer.
(like many pc download mmos, dependencies are in IE)
Either way this should fix your issues,
Browse to C:/Nexon/MapleStory (or wherever you installed it!)
Find gamelauncher.exe
Right click - properties - compatibility tab
Change compatibility mode to "Windows Vista" (no service pack!)
Find MapleStory.exe
Right click - Properties - compatibility tab
(If you use compatibility mode here HackShield Flags you and makes you restart)
Just make sure "Run As Administrator" is checked here.
This should allow you to launch the game from Gamelanucher.exe, Which opens options for users using steam, not needing to open an internet window to load maplestory. As well as stop the periodic crash to the desktop with no error message.
